Pre & Post Symposium Workshops
Pre Symposium Workshop
The importance of user involvement when justifying new research
Monday 26th November 2018
Room 1060, Abercrombie Business School, University of Sydney
The Pre-conference workshop will be held by Malcolm MacLeod (Professor of Neurology and Translational Neuroscience, University of Edinburgh, UK), Matt Westmore (Operations Director NIHR, UK), Jennifer Yost (Associate Professor, Villanova University, USA) and Hans Lund (Professor at the Centre for Evidence-Based Practice, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Norway) on behalf of the “Evidence-Based Research Network”.
“Justifying new research is part of the movement to minimize waste in research. We have called this approach an “Evidence-Based Research” approach and you can find more about this on the website: http://ebrnetwork.org/, and in the BMJ paper from 2016: Lund H, et al. Towards evidence based research. BMJ. 2016;355:i5440. Anyone can participate in this workshop but it would be particularly relevant for clinical researchers who would like to / already involve end-users in their research and/or are end-users themselves.
The overall aim of the workshop is to discuss how involvement of end-users in research practice could justify new research, and thus reduce waste in research.
Two questions will be discussed during the workshop:
- What are the risks of not involving end-users in identifying and prioritizing research questions?
- How to reconcile end-users perspectives with results from systematic reviews when justifying new research questions?
Post Symposium Summit
Thursday 29th and 30th November 2018
The Australian Clinical Trials Alliance will be holding their annual summit straight after the Symposium at the same venue. The ACTA Summit 2018 is precisely focussed on investigator-initiated, clinician-led clinical trials’ sector opportunities, challenges and expansion. Further information regarding the Summit is available here.
